So many young progressive people in Spokane and beyond have taken up the “City good, Suburb Bad” line that it has become more than a stereotype. Having spent several years living in a downtown highrise and now several years living in Spokane Valley’s rolling suburbs, the differences are not quite what many would believe. Thoughts about community and social interaction are easy to generalize but often not true. For those with the time and interest Design Observer has posted a tremendous piece addressing the urban/suburban divide here.
Small site, important message September 25, 2009
Last week we launched a microsite for Benewah Medical and Wellness Center that speaks specifically to diabetes in the Native American population. The site is simple and had a relatively small budget, but it’s sites like these that hopefully have the most impact in our community.
The Benewah Tribal Wellness center offers free screening for pre-diabetes and we were able to work in a free web survey from the American Diabetes Association which provides a quick web based test to get people started. The center has a couple other programs that people can read about and hopefully it starts a dialog in the reservation community that can be built upon in the coming years.
At it’s core graphic design is about communication and sites like these make me glad I’m part of it.
Edge Concrete September 15, 2009
Last week we launched a website in support of Edge Concrete’s Themed Environments division. They have worked with zoos all over the country and have a pretty extensive portfolio of concrete themed work.
IQ is teaming up with Edge at the AZA 2009 Annual Conference in Portland where we are displaying our custom touch screen kiosks designed for museum and zoo installations. I’ll try to add some photos of these in action in the near future. We’ve been busy as bees trying to get these out the door but I couldn’t be happier with how they’ve turned out.
Safety Net Spokane Launch August 7, 2009
Quisenberry has teamed up with Volunteers of America to launch a program for foster teens called Safety Net. The program exists to support foster teens who are over 18 and effectively “out of the system”. Since nobody really has their lives together at 18 this program aims to bridge the gap and help these kids transition into the adult years successfully. This site was built out by the IQ team and came out quite well in my opinion.
Rise of the Creative Class in Spokane? July 26, 2009
I think Richard Florida is a border-line shame but I do like creative people. Hanging around Spokane as an adult these last 10 years I have noticed something is changing. It started with downtown getting fixed up, new shops, restaurants, nightlife etc and has blossomed into something more. Actual art and culture is creeping in through the cracks as actual 20-30 year-olds have stuck around (or come back) instead of bolting for Portland and Seattle right after graduation. The thing I think people are now getting is our culture is made for/by us. Unlike Richard Florida I don’t care about charts and graphs but I can report what I see on the ground.
1) Better quality art in local galleries – there may not necessarily be more of them but there does seem to be more interesting and alternative art in local galleries. One recent example: Thirty Year Itch
2) Seattle area tech companies with newish branches here: Ascentium, Sitecrafting, Spokane companies with new Seattle branches: Magnor Sanborn
3) Better local rags: Crunk Roost, Spokane Metro Magazine
4) Better music: butt rock is all but dead and talent abounds (just look around)
5) 2 National Addys this year: Seven2 got one for work with Nick Jr and we at Quisenberry got one for work with URM.
This is just my tech/design/art related view but I like what I see.
IQ July 24, 2009
One of the cool things that has happened since I came onboard at Quisenberry is the launch of IQ – or Interactive Quisenberry. Treated as a seperate business, IQ is an interactive agency of 9 people who can build anything from interactive kiosks to iPhone apps and flash games. We can also make websites…
This is a temporary mini website for IQ but it is a defining moment for our young team.
Finally… June 10, 2009
The new 14th and Grand Salon website went live today after what felt like a really long time. Actual development was probably a couple months but could have been done much faster under different circumstances. In the end I think it turned out pretty well. There is a lot of style, some decent content, a desktop widget to download, and a whole lot of flash. I’m happy with the performance we’re getting by externally loading each section. And best of all the client loves it.
What’s up Tacoma… March 31, 2009

Mary’s Burger Bistro, the hot new downtown Tacoma eatery, saw it’s website (first phase) go live today. I think the site does a good job of capturing the homemade goodness that Mary’s is all about. The second phase should be launching in a few days and will bring online ordering into the mix for those looking for a downtown Tacoma power lunch. The highlight of this site is the custom food shots we had taken. I think the pictures add a ton (definitely over stock) and really show people the quality of food they can expect from Mary’s. This one’s going in the portfolio…
And another one… March 6, 2009
After a couple slow weeks we’re churning them out now. CDAEvents.com has been around in some way shape or form since December but we finally launched a more full featured version of what we’d like it to become. Putting together all the diverse entertainment options offered by the Coeur d’Alene Casino in a web friendly package has not been without it’s challenges. Hopefully this new site, as it grows and evolves, will be able to rise to the challenge and become a valuable resource to the Casino’s patrons.
